We built this tool to be honest, not impressive. Every figure the calculator uses is sourced from publicly available HVAC industry research and the U.S. Department of Energy's guidance on home energy use. Here's the full logic:

  • HVAC accounts for roughly 45% of a typical U.S. home energy bill (DOE estimate).
  • Systems under 5 years old lose ~2% of rated efficiency per year on average.
  • Systems 10–14 years old typically run 8–12% below original efficiency.
  • Systems 15+ years old can run 15–25% below efficiency — sometimes more.
  • A professional tune-up typically recovers 30–60% of accumulated efficiency loss.
  • The calculator shows the low and high end of that recovery range — not a guarantee.
  • Home size (sq ft) is used as a plausibility check, not as a direct energy multiplier.
  • Results do not account for insulation quality, usage patterns, local utility rates, or equipment brand.
