The oldest pipe in Canyon County, and the newest
Middleton's ground was parceled out in 1863, named for sitting midway between Old Fort Boise and Keeney's Ferry on the Oregon Trail. The town has already moved once — an 1872 flood cut the Boise River a new channel and stranded the settlement on an island, so it relocated after 1880 and incorporated in 1910. Which means Middleton has genuinely old built ground, unlike most of the fast-growing Treasure Valley.
The historic core, around Middleton Road and the old Mill and Train Depot, near Roadside Park by the town's only stoplight. Houses here run from the early 1900s through mid-century, and cast-iron drain and galvanized steel supply are still in service under a lot of them. Cast iron corrodes from the inside until the wall roughens and starts catching whatever passes; galvanized narrows as it corrodes, producing the slow pressure decline homeowners spend years blaming on fixtures. Add mature trees along those streets and you get roots at the drain joints — which is why a line here can be cleared cleanly and back up a month later.
Everything since 2000. Middleton has roughly tripled in size since 2000, so most of the town is newer construction on PEX and PVC, and the calls differ in kind: builder-grade shutoffs and fill valves reaching the end of a short life, hot water equipment sized for a smaller household than the one that moved in, and construction debris left in a lateral during the build. If nobody has ever looked at your main line, one sewer camera inspection in Middleton settles it — a bellied lateral caught early is a small job, caught late an excavation.
River-bottom ground, wells and septic
Middleton sits at about 2,400 feet on State Highway 44, three miles east of I-84's exit 25, with the Boise River along its edge and Foote Park on the north side of town. That proximity shapes two things.
First, groundwater: property down in the bottoms sits closer to the water table than most of the valley, which is why sump pumps, crawlspace moisture and drainage questions come up here more than a few miles up the bench. A crawlspace that smells damp in spring is worth investigating rather than tolerating.
Second, septic. Plenty of Middleton property outside city sewer runs on a private tank and drainfield, often with a private well. No chemical drain cleaner — it kills the bacteria the tank runs on, so mechanical clearing only. Pump on a schedule, not on symptoms: by the time a tank backs up, solids may already have reached the drainfield. And because Middleton is in Canyon County, septic permitting goes through Southwest District Health, not Central District Health. Septic pumping in Middleton is a flat $395 up to 1,000 gallons.
The two dates that generate calls
Middleton's ground has been watered by ditch and canal since the 1800s, and the pressurized irrigation systems serving the newer subdivisions get charged and tested in the first weeks of April. That's when winter damage surfaces: split risers, cracked backflow assemblies, hose bibs that spent the freeze with a hose attached. Idaho requires backflow assemblies tested annually by a licensed tester, and doing it before the system charges is the calm version.
The other date is the first hard freeze. A frozen pipe usually doesn't leak until it thaws, so damage shows up after the cold has passed — wet spot afterward means call now: emergency plumbing in Middleton.
Cabling or jetting
Cabling feeds a rotating cable down the line to break through or hook out a blockage — fast, cheaper, correct for one fixture with an ordinary clog, and most of what we run, at our $59 drain cleaning in Middleton special.
