The bridge came first, and the town grew around it
Marsing was platted on the south bank in 1920, the year a bridge finally replaced the ferry crossings downstream. The post office opened in 1921 and that building still stands on Main Street. The city did not incorporate until 1941.
That sequence matters underground. The oldest housing sits in the few blocks between Main Street and the river — 1920s through mid-century stock, plumbed the way everything was then: galvanized steel supply, cast-iron drain, and vitrified clay running out to the main. Galvanized narrows from the inside as it corrodes, slowly enough that people replace three faucets before anyone suspects the pipe. Cast iron roughens until it catches whatever passes. Clay comes in short sections with mortared joints, and the trees on those streets have had decades to find one. That is why a line down here gets cleared in March and backs up in May — the blockage was the symptom, the joint is still open. Out past the grade it is a different town: acreages, manufactured homes and newer builds on PEX and PVC, where the failures are angle stops, fill valves and a water heater sized for whoever lived there first rather than corroding pipe.
The water is the job here
This is what separates Marsing from anywhere on the Boise River side of the valley. Idaho DEQ maps a Marsing nitrate priority area, one of the state's designated areas of degraded groundwater, and the USGS sampled fifteen wells here in 2018 to find out what is in it. Iron came back between 465 and 4,180 micrograms per liter, manganese between 54 and 693, sulfate 300 to 624 milligrams per liter and total dissolved solids 511 to 1,350 — all above EPA's secondary standards. Seven arsenic results exceeded the 10 microgram-per-liter drinking-water limit, and one nitrate result reached 24.6 mg/L against a limit of 10.
Translated into plumbing: iron and manganese are the orange and black staining in the toilet tank and around the tub. Dissolved solids are scale — on the elements, on the tank bottom, in every aerator and shower cartridge in the house — and they work a water heater's sacrificial anode harder than the brochure assumed.
