Is your shop really in Caldwell?
Yes. Our dispatch software has kept records since October 2020 (the company predates it by decades), and those records show 4,165 jobs at Caldwell addresses for 1,346 separate households, 3,746 of them completed, with 88 different lead technicians having worked a Caldwell address. They split almost evenly by ZIP, 65 in 83607 and 59 in 83605. Neighbors just past the city line have their own pages: Middleton, Nampa, Parma and Wilder.
My furnace quit this morning. Will it be fixed today?
Often. Sixty-six calls at Caldwell addresses were booked as no heat between April 2023 and July 2026, from 47 households, and 59 were completed.
Company-wide the sample is larger and says the same thing: 1,311 no-heat calls on the books, 1,154 completed. The High or Urgent flag is what moves a cold house ahead of routine work on the dispatch board, and every Caldwell no-heat call booked since October 2024, all twelve of them, was flagged High.
Caldwell furnace jobs have landed on a Saturday four times and on a Sunday never, so if it is Saturday night, ask directly about Monday and you will get a direct answer. And ring early during a cold snap: the week the whole valley drops hard is the week every marginal furnace between Parma and Nampa quits at once, and the early callers get the open slots.
Is a furnace that is blowing cold air an emergency?
Sometimes. Leave the house and call from outside if you smell gas, if a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding, or if there is scorching or soot around the burner compartment; those are safety calls, not repair questions. Urgent but not dangerous: no heat with the outside air below freezing and a house that is losing ground. That earns the High flag and the earliest van. Can wait for morning: a furnace that still runs but is noisy, cycles short, or leaves one end of the house cool.
The cold-air complaint itself lands in all three buckets. Cool air in the opening moments of a cycle is normal on many furnaces, because the blower is timed to start before the heat exchanger is fully warm. Cold air for the entire cycle with the burners never lighting is an ignition or safety-chain problem. Cold air after the burners lit and then dropped out is nearly always the flame sensor. A dead furnace and a lukewarm one are different repairs, so tell the dispatcher which one you have.
What will the technician do once the panel is off?
A furnace will tell on itself if you let it, so the visit is built around listening before touching. First the simple things: breaker, cabinet switch, the blower-door safety switch a filter change can leave half-pressed, the filter, the thermostat, and on a high-efficiency unit the condensate trap and the two PVC pipes outside. Then the control board's fault code, read before anyone cycles the power and erases it.
Then the run-through, in the order the furnace itself does it. Thermostat asks. Board wakes. Inducer motor spins, and the pressure switch has to prove the exhaust path is open. Igniter glows. Gas valve opens. The flame sensor has to see fire within seconds or the board closes the valve again. The blower joins after its delay, and the high-limit watches cabinet temperature the whole time. Whichever step does not happen is the step, and the technician is watching for it. He measures rather than guesses along the way: flame-sensor microamps, capacitor microfarads, motor amp draw, manifold gas pressure, and the temperature rise across the heat exchanger, since a furnace outside its rise range is starving for air. Last, the heat exchanger and a combustion check, since a crack there ends the repair conversation.
Which parts do you carry, and which have to be ordered?
The parts that quit on the coldest night of the year are the ones in the van. From our pricebook: universal hot surface igniters, flame sensors in straight and angled forms plus OEM versions, a universal furnace pressure switch, universal high-limit switches that open between 135 and 175 degrees, a multi-fit furnace control board, universal 115-volt blower motors in the 1/6 to 1/2 horsepower range at 1075 RPM, dual run capacitors rated 440 volts from 30/5 up to 80/7.5 microfarads, 80-percent inducer motors, single-stage thermostats, and the 30-amp dual-element cartridge fuses that guard electric furnaces.
What has to be ordered is the brand-specific part: an OEM gas valve the universal does not fit, a two-stage inducer assembly cast for a single cabinet, a control board for a furnace that went out of production years ago, a variable-speed blower module. If your furnace lands there, that news comes on the first visit, together with what can be done to keep the house warm until the part arrives. The Caldwell record: of the 109 furnace jobs completed at Caldwell addresses, 102 were closed in a single appointment, five took two visits and two took three.
Why do Caldwell furnaces fail when they do?
The calendar first. Heating and cooling calls at Caldwell addresses peak in June and October with 31 each, then July with 30. Pull out the no-heat calls alone and January leads with five, followed by March and October with three each. Company-wide the pattern is the same shape magnified, October 254 and November 255 furnace jobs to July's 29. Then the local reasons.
Field dust and August smoke. The hop yards and row crops off Farmway Road and Hop Road are working ground, and fieldwork, harvest and late-summer smoke load a one-inch pleated filter faster than the packaging assumes. A starved furnace runs hot, trips its limit and cycles short, which wears igniters and board relays out early. Where the cabinet has room, a four- or five-inch media filter takes far longer to clog.
Freezing fog. Caldwell sits low along the Boise River and Indian Creek, and when the valley inverts in December and January the fog freezes onto the PVC intake and exhaust of a high-efficiency furnace. Iced intake, no draft at the pressure switch, lockout. Know where those pipes exit your wall and look at them after a foggy night.
The old grid. The blocks off Dearborn, Everett, Fillmore, Blaine and Cleveland Boulevard hold houses built long before sealed-combustion furnaces; a house here may have started as a gravity furnace later converted to forced air. The tells are oversized round trunk lines, an undersized return, and a masonry chimney shared with a gas water heater, which a side-wall-vented replacement furnace would leave alone in a flue far too big for it.
Garages, attics and the country beyond the mains. Newer subdivisions north and west of town put the furnace in the garage with flex duct through an unconditioned attic: a cold cabinet, garage dust at the return, and combustion air somebody had to think about. Out Upper Pleasant Ridge, Mason Road, Harvey Road and Sand Hollow Road the furnace may burn propane, live in a utility room off a shop, and share a crawl space with mice that chew thermostat wire, which looks exactly like a dead thermostat until somebody follows it. Say propane and say outbuilding when you call; both change what goes in the van.
How much is this going to cost me?
Nobody honest quotes a furnace repair over the phone, and we will not either, because the figure is built from things nobody can see from the road:
- Which part failed, and whether it is a stocked universal or an ordered assembly.
- Gas or electric, two different parts lists, and propane adds a wrinkle of its own.
- Where the furnace lives. A garage unit with clear floor around it and a crawl-space unit reached on hands and knees are different hours of work.
- Whether the failed part caused the problem or fell victim to it. A furnace that ate a pressure switch because its intake was iced over needs the ice gone and the switch checked, not a new switch.
- What the safety checks turn up, because a cracked heat exchanger changes the visit from a repair into a replacement conversation.
What you get in exchange for not finding a number here is a fixed price in writing before any work starts, and the right to say no to it. When replacement is on the table, the on-site visit that prices repair against replacement is free and obligates you to nothing. Do I fix it or replace it?
Of the 80 households with furnace work on our books, 51 have had exactly one furnace job, 16 have had two, 11 have had three and two have had four. Watch for repetition. One failed igniter is one failed igniter, but three failures in three different sections of one furnace in a single winter is equipment that has stopped being worth diagnosing, and a cracked heat exchanger ends it on the spot however old the unit. Can you keep the house from freezing until you get here?
The plumbing side is where Caldwell homeowners get hurt. Stop resetting the furnace; one reset is reasonable, a string of them leaves unburned gas in the cabinet and erases the fault code the technician needs. Run space heaters the boring way: straight into the wall, never through a power strip or extension cord, well clear of curtains and bedding, and off when you sleep or leave. Do not use the oven as a heater, and check that the carbon monoxide alarm has a battery.
Then protect the pipes, because a burst line costs more than any furnace repair. Open the cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls, leave a pencil-thin trickle running at the tap farthest from where the water enters the house, and locate the main water shutoff before dark. I have an electric furnace or a heat pump. Same phone number?
Same number, different visit. With nothing to burn, an electric furnace has no igniter, flame sensor, gas valve, flue or heat exchanger to fail. What it does have is a bank of resistance elements, the sequencers that stage them on, a contactor, and its own fuses, often 30-amp dual-element cartridge fuses in the disconnect. The technician measures each element's draw, confirms the stages come on in order, and checks the breaker and disconnect; only the blower motor and its capacitor fail the same way on both.
Heat pumps start at the outdoor unit: defrost board, thermistors, reversing valve, and the backup heat strips that carry the house when the outdoor unit cannot keep up. We install them here as well; a full system finished at a Caldwell address in January 2026 was a Gree three-ton heat pump with 15-kilowatt backup heat strips, a T6 Pro thermostat and a condensate pump with a safety switch. Would a fall inspection have caught this?
