Say propane, say well, and say outbuilding if the furnace is in one. Propane changes the visit three ways: the orifices and regulator are set for propane and the manifold pressure the technician reads is different from natural gas; a tank that ran low in January and was refilled has air in the line to purge before the furnace lights reliably; and a propane furnace fitted with natural-gas parts by a previous repair has been sooting its heat exchanger while nobody was watching. Then protect the plumbing, because a burst line costs more than any furnace repair. Open the cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls, leave a pencil-lead trickle running at the tap farthest from where the water enters the house, and find the main shutoff before dark. Close the garage door if the furnace is out there.
What moves the price up or down?
We do not quote a furnace repair over the phone, because the number is built from things nobody can see from Commercial Way:
- The part. A flame sensor and an inducer assembly are not in the same neighborhood, and a stocked universal costs less than an ordered brand-specific part.
- Gas or electric. Different parts lists entirely, and propane adds a wrinkle of its own.
