Cleared twice in a year means you are renting, not buying
Clearing a drain removes what is blocking it today. It does not change the pipe. When a line runs clean for eight months and then backs up in the same spot, the cable did its job and the pipe stayed exactly as broken as it was before. You bought time, and the bill resets every time the time runs out.
One backup in a line that has never given trouble is usually something that went down the drain that had no business going down it. Two in the same line inside twelve months means the pipe is holding something back that a cable passes straight through. At three, we will not sell you another clearing without a camera first, because quoting the same fix a third time is selling the same disappointment.
The four things that make a line clog in the same place
Roots at a joint. Every joint in a clay or cast iron lateral is a seam, and a seam that has shifted a quarter inch leaks moisture into the soil. Roots find it and fan into a mat inside the pipe. A cable cuts a hole through the mat and water flows again, but the root ball is still anchored in the joint and it regrows on the tree's schedule. That is why repeat backups so often land at the same time of year.
A belly. A low spot where a section settled out of grade and now holds standing water. Solids drop out there instead of being carried along, and the pipe silts up from the bottom. Clearing scours the sediment out, but the dip is still a dip and it fills again with the next load of laundry.
A broken or offset section. Crushed pipe, a cracked hub, or a section that dropped and left a lip at the joint. That lip catches paper and grease the way a fingernail catches thread, and it turns up most often where a lateral crosses a driveway, a settled utility trench, or an old irrigation crossing.
An off-grade lateral. A line laid with too little fall never reaches the velocity it needs to keep itself clean, so it accumulates instead of scouring. We see it in newer construction where the lateral was set fast and never re-shot, and on older properties where a line got extended for an addition and picked up a flat run in the middle.
Where you live changes the odds. The older cores of Caldwell, Nampa and Boise still run clay and cast iron laterals with a joint every few feet, shaded by mature trees whose roots have had decades to find them, and irrigation canals hold soil moisture up all season so root growth stays aggressive later into the year than most homeowners expect. Ground near the Boise River sits over a high water table, and a saturated trench is where pipe settles into a belly. Valley hard water leaves scale that narrows old cast iron and gives grease something to hold onto. Newer construction in Kuna, Star and Middleton has the opposite profile: modern pipe and sound joints, but laterals still holding construction debris nobody cleaned out and flat runs where the fall was never verified.
What a camera grades that a cable cannot
A cable gives you one bit of information: it stopped, or it did not. A good operator can feel roots against a hard stop, but that is an inference. A camera is a measurement.
- Material. Clay, cast iron, Orangeburg, ABS, PVC. Orangeburg, a tar-impregnated fiber pipe used in some mid-century construction, deforms into an oval as it fails and is never worth clearing again.
- Where it is, in feet. The reel counter gives distance from the access point, and a sonde in the camera head lets a locator mark the spot and depth on the surface. That turns "somewhere under the yard" into a paint mark and a number.
- How bad, not just that it is bad. A belly is graded by how much of the pipe diameter the standing water covers. A root mat is graded by how much of the cross-section it fills, and whether it is one hair root at a joint or a curtain across three. An offset is graded by how much of the pipe wall no longer lines up.
- How many defects there are. This is the one that burns people. Plenty of lines have a root joint at 22 feet and a belly at 51 feet. Repair only the first, get a backup in the spring, and you would reasonably conclude the repair failed.
Sometimes the camera shows round, clean, correctly sloped pipe and the answer is a fixture or a usage problem, not the lateral. That is a real result too, and the run is recorded either way, so you see the footage and so does whoever works on the house next.
A camera cannot see through standing sewage or a packed grease plug, so on a line that is backed up right now the order is restore flow first, then inspect. On a heavily scaled line we hydro jet it so the wall is scrubbed back to bare material and the camera reads the pipe instead of the coating on it.
What the interval between backups tells us
- Weeks apart. Usually a hard defect close to the house: a collapsed section, a heavy offset, or a belly deep enough that the line carries only a fraction of its diameter.
- Every few months. Grease and scale rebuilding on a rough wall, or a partial root mat closing back up.
- About once a year, same season. Roots, nearly every time. The local tell is a backup that arrives when irrigation starts in the spring, or when the canals run and the soil stays wet.
- Only when the house is full. Slope or diameter. There is enough capacity for a trickle and not enough for real flow.
That does not replace a camera, but it tells the technician what to look for. Write the dates down before you call.
What the fix looks like once you know the cause
The camera decides the repair, not the other way around. If the pipe is sound and the problem is roots at one or two joints, root cutting on a maintenance interval plus jetting is a legitimate plan, and we will say so rather than sell a repair you do not need. If the joint has separated far enough that roots return within a season, a trenchless spot repair or full liner seals the seam so there is nothing left to grow into. A crushed or badly out-of-grade run usually calls for pipe bursting, which pulls new pipe along the old path from two small pits. A collapse, a long run that has lost grade, or an Orangeburg lateral gets sewer line repair or replacement, and we will say that plainly instead of quoting a liner that will not hold. We camera the line again afterward, because verification is part of the job.
Timing and what it costs
Most recurring-backup calls are a single visit: restore flow, run the camera and the surface locate on the same trip, review the footage before the technician leaves. A spot repair or liner on a residential lateral is normally a one-day job. Bursting or open replacement depends on length, depth, and what sits on top of the line, whether that is a driveway, mature landscaping, or a right-of-way that needs a permit and a utility locate before anyone digs.
